The Conference of Philosophy and Engineering to Be Held at Khatam University

The conference of philosophy and engineering will be held in collaboration with Iran's Hekmat and Philosophy Research Institute, Khajeh Nasir al-Din Toosi University of Technology, and Science Academy on November 30^th, 2023 at Khatam University in Tehran.

According to the website of Khatam University, "The Conference of Philosophy and Engineering" will take place on Thursday, November 30^th, 2023 in collaboration with Iran's Hekmat and Philosophy Research Institute, Khajeh Nasir al-Din Toosi University of Technology and Science Academy of the Islamic Republic of Iran and with several lectures of prominent academic figures of these two fields. This conference will be held in person and online at Khatam University in Tehran.

Dr. Shahin Avani who is the director of the department of Philosophy is the scientific secretary of the conference and Dr. Abdollah Shamisa, who is the director of the electrical engineering department of Khatam University will be the executive secretary of the conference.

Introduction of the conference:

Engineering philosophy is the name of a relatively new field of study that focuses on the nature of engineering activities, the methodology of engineers' work, the interaction between engineering and society, and the ethical and aesthetic aspects of engineering activities. The philosophy of engineering overlaps with the two fields of philosophy of science and philosophy of technology, but it also deals with the specific aspects of the work of engineers that distinguish it from other fields. Getting to know how the two fields of philosophy and engineering interact can be interesting and informative for both engineering students and philosophy students.

In the conference of philosophy and engineering, which is the first conference with such a topic being hold with the participation of researchers from both fields, some fundamental aspects of the philosophy of engineering will be introduced in order to provide the opportunity for wider research in this field of study.

Philosophy and engineering are two completely separate fields in universities and research centers of the country. This is despite the fact that philosophy has made a significant contribution to the fundamental formation of engineering thoughts and is still contributing. For example, things such as the general theory of systems, mathematical modeling of systems for design, the concept of transferring paradigms in engineering and the criteria of science and pseudoscience and its effects in engineering are amongst these contributions. On the other hand, engineering and its algorithms have also affected the process of philosophical studies. For example, the feedback of concepts such as engineering studies in the system, indeterminacy and optimality in enriching the view of philosophers, as well as expressing philosophical theories with computational and planning approaches are amongst these effects.
