Structure of The TOFEL Test
Writing Skills (TOEFL-Writing)
The Writing section of the TOEFL iBT test evaluates your ability to write in English within an academic setting, as well as to present your ideas in a clear and well-organized manner.
It includes two tasks:
- Integrated Writing Task (20 minutes): Read a short passage, listen to a lecture, and then write a response based on both sources.
- Writing for an Academic Discussion Task (10 minutes): Participate in an online classroom discussion by stating and supporting your opinion.
You will type your responses on a computer keyboard.
Test Duration: Approximately 29 minutes to complete the Writing section.
Scoring: Tasks are evaluated using the Writing Scoring Guides (Rubrics) (PDF) by a combination of AI scoring and certified human raters. The raw scores are then converted to a scaled score ranging from 0 to 30.
Speaking Skills (TOEFL-Speaking)
The TOEFL iBT Speaking section evaluates your ability to communicate effectively in English within academic settings. The four tasks reflect real-life situations you might encounter both inside and outside the classroom.
- Question 1: Independent Speaking Task — Share your ideas, opinions, and experiences in your response.
- Questions 2–4: Integrated Speaking Tasks — Combine multiple English skills (listening and speaking, or listening, reading, and speaking) to respond, just as you would in real-world academic scenarios.
Preparation Time: You'll have 15–30 seconds to prepare before each response, which will be 45 or 60 seconds long.
Speaking Accents: The section features native-speaker accents from North America, the U.K., New Zealand, and Australia to reflect the diversity of accents encountered while studying abroad. The first question may include any of these accents, while the remaining questions primarily feature North American accents.
Test Duration: The Speaking section takes approximately 16 minutes to complete.
Scoring: Tasks are scored using the Speaking Scoring Guides (Rubrics) (PDF) by both AI and certified human raters. Raw scores are converted to a scaled score ranging from 0 to 30.
Listening Skills (TOEFL-Listening)
The TOEFL iBT Listening section assesses your ability to comprehend conversations and lectures in English. It evaluates skills such as:
- Basic comprehension
- Understanding the speaker's attitude and degree of certainty
- Connecting information
Listening Questions: This section includes lectures and conversations that use language commonly heard on university campuses:
- 3 lectures (3–5 minutes each): Some include classroom discussions; 6 questions per lecture
- 2 conversations (3 minutes each): 5 questions per conversation
You may take notes on any audio throughout the test to help answer questions.
Test Duration: The Listening section takes approximately 36 minutes to complete.
Reading Comprehension (TOEFL-Reading Comprehension)
The TOEFL iBT Reading section evaluates your ability to read and comprehend academic materials. It includes two reading passages, each approximately 700 words long, with 10 questions per passage. The section takes about 35 minutes to complete.
The passages are excerpts from university-level textbooks used to introduce various topics. They cover a wide range of subjects, but there’s no need to worry if you're unfamiliar with the topic. All the information required to answer the questions is included in the passage. Additionally, a glossary feature is available to define uncommon words, if needed.
Introducing the TOEFL Test
Getting to know the TOEFL test
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is one of the most widely recognized and respected English language tests. It is designed for purposes such as studying, working, and immigration. It allows students to showcase their English skills, particularly for admission and advanced studies at esteemed international universities. Over 13,000 universities and institutions across more than 160 countries accept TOEFL scores.
TOEFL internet-based test (iBT)
The TOEFL exam is conducted in three ways: paper-based, computer-based, and Internet-based (iBT). The TOEFL online test lasts 4 hours and has 4 sections. Each section may measure one or more skills. The score of each skill is between 0 and 30, and the total score is between 0 and 120. A score of 79 or 80 in this exam is equivalent to 550 in TOEFL paper-based exams, which is required to enter most universities in graduate school.
The TOEFL iBT takes approximately 2 hours, but you should plan for 3 hours to allow for check-in.
