Structure of The TOFEL Test

Writing Skills (TOEFL-Writing)

This section consists of two parts; An integrated part and an independent part. In the integrated part, the student must read an academic text, then listen to its continuation and, at the end, write their comments about the text. In the independent part, the student writes a personal essay about a given question.

In the integrated part, the candidate must first read a short text (250 to 300 words) and then listen to a lecture related to the text and answer a question using the information obtained from the text and the lecture. Candidates have 20 minutes to write their answer, which should be between 150 and 225 words.

On the other side, the independent part of the writing section is similar to the writing section of the TOEFL computer-based test. In this section, the candidate has 20 minutes to write a short essay of about 300 words on a specific topic.

Speaking Skills (TOEFL-Speaking)

This part of the TOEFL test has six tasks. These assignments include two independent assignments and four integrated assignments. The independent question part is about academic life and the participants have to explain about a certain topic using their personal knowledge and experiences.

The integrated part includes reading, listening and speaking, in which the candidate must talk about the summary of a text they read or hear, or present their new ideas. These talks should be precise, clear and have an analysis of the information provided. The duration of answering each of the tasks varies from 45 to 60 seconds.

Listening Skills (TOEFL-Listening)

The listening section of the TOEFL test assesses the candidate's ability to understand English conversations (as spoken in North America). The listening part of the Internet TOEFL test (iBT) is not very different from its computer version (CBT). This section consists of two conversations and four lectures with numerous questions.

Reading Comprehension (TOEFL-Reading Comprehension)

The Reading Comprehension section of the iBT online TOEFL is not much different from its computerized version (CBT). This section consists of three academic texts, each of which is followed by several questions. Each of these texts is made of about 650 to 750 words. The subject of the texts is academic and usually found in academic books.

The questions are mainly about the main topic of the text, details, perceptions, other ways of expressing sentences, placement of sentences and synonyms. In the iBT exam, the student must have several skills such as summarizing, quickly grasping main ideas, and tabulation. In general, prior knowledge of the text is not required, but prior knowledge can be helpful.

The type of questions in this section is a combination of questions found in the Computer-Based TOEFL (CBT) and newer types of questions where participants have to complete a table or a narrative conclusion.

Two features have been added to the Reading section, one is a vocabulary list and the other is a "Review Option". "Vocabulary list" allows the candidate to find the meaning of the key words in the text and with the "revision option", they can revise the answers.
