The Department of English Literature at Khatam University to hold the Second Round of the Winter School

Published: Wednesday, February 1, 2023

The second winter school of English Language Department of Khatam University, focusing on Irish literature, will be held this February.

According to the reporter of Khatam University’s website, the second winter school of Khatam University's English language department focusing on Irish literature will be held in person on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023. Participation in this course is open and free for all interested parties, and applicants can join thenotification channel of the group's events to learn about the latest updates and upcoming programs of the English language group.

The first session of this round, entitled "Seamus Heaney's poetic narrative of Irish people from past until now" will be held on Wednesday, February 8th from 10:00 to 12:00.

This session is a reading of 13 poetry collections written by Seamus Heaney, a contemporary Irish poet, focusing on the historiographic aspects of Heaney's poetry. This review tries to demonstrate that in Heaney's historiographical poems, the boundary between narrative and history disappears, and as a result, the narrative nature of history and the history nature of narrative are both emphasized.

Further to that, the second session of this round entitled "Machine-like, Mindless Characters in Samuel Beckett's Plays" with the speech of Shahriar Mansouri, Assistant Professor of Modern Irish Literature, Shahid Beheshti University will be heldon the same day from 12:00 to 14:00.

In Samuel Beckett's works, especially his plays, characters often appear as animated objects with language deficiencies who either cannot think straight or are unable to express their multi-layered mind in a proper language. While in the former, a robot-like, automated image of the human comes to mind, the latter presents the character as an alien, if not a monster. This research, on one hand, considers this cognitive-linguistic inefficiency of the characters to be the result of psychological traumas, and on the other hand, considers it to be the result of modern characterization in which human is manifested as a narrative puppet.

The aforementioned sessions will be held at building number one of Khatam University at the address of Imam Reza Hall, the Ground Floor, Khatam University, Hakim Azam Street, North Shiraz Street, Molla Sadra Avenue, Tehran, Iran.
