According to the Public Relations and Website Office of Khatam University, the “Introduction to Sustainability” event was held on Monday, October 12, at the Imam Reza Conference Hall, featuring Dr. Azar Saemian as the keynote instructor alongside interested faculty, staff, and students.
At the beginning of the session, Dr. Seyed Reza Jalalzadeh, Director of Research Affairs at Khatam University, described sustainability not as a mere luxury or fleeting trend, but as an absolute necessity for future generations, communities, and organizations. He stated: “We now face the crucial question: How can we achieve academic and scientific progress without depleting future resources and opportunities? Sustainability reminds us that true success lies in creating long-term, sustainable value.”
Highlighting the responsibilities of academic institutions in fostering societal sustainability, he added: “Today, universities are no longer responsible solely for education and knowledge production; by cultivating responsible leaders and promoting sustainable innovation, they actively drive national sustainability. At Khatam University, sustainability is a core pillar of our strategic plan, and the Sustainability Steering Committee—operating under the supervision of Dr. Azar Saemian—actively oversees issues and initiatives in this domain.”
Continuing the program, Dr. Azar Saemian—Senior Consultant for Khatam University’s Strategic Plan and Secretary-General of the Iran Management Association—announced the university board’s firm commitment to taking decisive steps toward achieving top global sustainability rankings. She noted: “With the roadmap we have developed, reaching this standing is not overly complex, and God willing, this goal is entirely attainable.”
Defining sustainability, she explained: “Sustainability means utilizing all available resources in a way that meets current needs without compromising the needs of future generations. It encompasses actions that minimize negative environmental impacts, conserve energy and natural resources, ensure safety for communities and consumers, and remain economically viable. Sustainability focuses on the ultimate outcome, whereas sustainable development focuses on the path taken to achieve it.”
Listing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—including Clean Water and Sanitation, Gender Equality, Quality of Education, Good Health and Well-being, Zero Hunger, No Poverty, Responsible Consumption and Production, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Reduced Inequalities, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Affordable and Clean Energy, Partnerships for the Goals, Life on Land, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, Life Below Water, and Climate Action—the senior consultant emphasized that sustainable development is globally recognized through these overarching objectives.
Saemian identified the key pillars of sustainability as Environment, Governance, and Social issues, adding: “All three must advance simultaneously and overlap to achieve true sustainability; for instance, you can only claim effective governance in sustainability when you can trace the positive environmental outcomes of your decisions.”
Emphasizing that development begins with the individual and that expanding communication networks is an essential prerequisite for sustainable development, the Secretary-General of the Iran Management Association stated: “The core objectives of sustainability involve simplifying sustainability criteria to minimize environmental impact, safeguard natural resources, and protect community health and well-being.”
Noting that sustainability audits and monitoring frameworks track at least 60 measurable indicators, she discussed emerging global sustainability approaches, including energy management, sustainable technology, renewability, carbon reduction, and innovation in products and services. She reiterated: “To establish sustainability, we must transition from passive observers into proactive agents of change. Ultimately, internalization is paramount in sustainable development.”
Addressing sustainability specifically at Khatam University, Saemian noted: “In our university’s sustainability program, we believe that a sustainable university is an educational institution that equips global citizens for sustainable development, offers insights into urgent social challenges, and reduces the environmental and social footprint of its academic operations. Concurrently, it empowers students, faculty, researchers, and staff to champion sustainable practices and places sustainability among its highest priorities.”
Saemian announced the establishment of the Khatam University Sustainability Committee and the drafting of 13 initial strategies under the university’s sustainable development plan, adding: “This program is currently being pursued with serious, targeted, and impactful momentum. To this end, Khatam University has signed an agreement with the United Metrics Institute in Austria regarding sustainability, aiming to become recognized as Iran’s pioneering sustainable university with an international ranking.”
According to her, the university’s green and sustainable living initiatives will focus on fostering sustainability knowledge and skills, community problem-solving capabilities, carbon reduction, optimal water and energy consumption, waste reduction, intergenerational equity, sustainable employment, and social responsibility. She concluded: “Sustainability knows no borders, and its solutions can only emerge from collaboration, the exchange of ideas, and the bridging of cultures. A sustainable future is not merely a dream, but a shared commitment that we build together.”
The “Introduction to Sustainability” event concluded with an open Q&A session where attendees discussed the topics raised and proposed potential slogans for Khatam University’s sustainability initiatives.
