Peace: The Common Language of Humanity

According to the Public Relations and Website Office of Khatam University, peace is not merely the absence of war and conflict; rather, it is a profound and deeply human concept that takes shape through justice, respect for human dignity, acceptance of differences, dialogue, and cooperation. A society in which diverse perspectives have an opportunity to be heard and differences are resolved through dialogue and reason has taken a meaningful step toward lasting peace.

The idea of designating a global day dedicated to peace was formally established in 1981 with the adoption of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 36/67. Under this resolution, the International Day of Peace was initially observed on the third Tuesday of September, coinciding with the opening of the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly. The first observance of the day took place in September 1982.

In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly, with the adoption of Resolution 55/282, designated September 21 as the fixed date for the International Day of Peace and officially designated it as a day of non-violence and global ceasefire. This measure underscored the need to create an opportunity to halt hostilities and strengthen peacebuilding efforts around the world.

Universities, as centers of knowledge, thought, and dialogue, have a fundamental role to play in promoting a culture of peace. A university is an environment in which geographical and cultural boundaries fade in the presence of knowledge and ideas, and constructive dialogue among people can pave the way for mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.

Khatam University, recognizing the importance of knowledge, ethics, dialogue, and social responsibility, commemorates the International Day of Peace and emphasizes the importance of promoting a culture of tolerance, respect for differences, and constructive dialogue within society.
