Environmental Protection: A Major Step Toward Sustainable Development

Published: Friday, June 5, 2026

Environmental protection has become one of the most important pillars of sustainable development worldwide.

According to the Public Relations and Website Office of Khatam University, the environment consists of a set of interacting external physical factors and living organisms that influence the growth, development, and behavior of all forms of life. In simpler terms, the environment encompasses all settings in which life exists and serves as the primary source of water, air, and natural resources essential for the survival of all living beings.

Protecting the environment is crucial for preserving biodiversity, ensuring clean air and water, maintaining food security, and stabilizing the climate. Healthy ecosystems regulate natural cycles, absorb carbon, and help mitigate the harmful effects of greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously providing resources vital to human survival and economic prosperity. Furthermore, safeguarding the environment ensures that future generations will have access to essential natural resources. By protecting the environment, we preserve indispensable ecosystem services, prevent costly environmental degradation, and promote a healthier and more sustainable future for both humanity and the planet.

Environmental degradation has inflicted significant and often irreversible damage on human life. Today, environmental protection is recognized as one of the world's major challenges and is considered a key component of both social justice and sustainable development. Addressing environmental crises requires strengthening educational processes, which constitute one of the most fundamental approaches to environmental protection. The ultimate goal is to raise public awareness and foster a culture of environmental responsibility at all levels of society.

In line with these objectives, and to increase public awareness of the importance of the environment while encouraging policymakers to take decisive action against environmental destruction and the loss of wildlife species, the United Nations designated June 5 as World Environment Day (WED). Each year, numerous events and activities are organized worldwide to draw public attention to issues that threaten and pollute the environment.

As a global observance, World Environment Day provides an opportunity to inspire meaningful changes in public behavior and habits while raising international awareness of the environmental challenges facing our planet.
