Is the Field of Architecture a Subfield of Engineering?
Published: Saturday, February 24, 2024
The specialized meeting "From Soul to Body, Examining Two Different Perspectives" with the aim of discussing whether "Architecture" is a subfield of "Engineering" or not is being held on February 28th, 2024 at the Faculty of Art and Architecture of Khatam University.
According to the public relations and website of Khatam University, the history of whether architecture is a subfield of engineering or not is not exactly clear. We know that since the beginning of the academicization of architecture in Iran, the prefix "engineering" has been defined for it.
During these years, there has always been a difference of opinion among architects on whether it is architectural engineering, or it is more oriented towards artistic and historical topics.
A group of architects do not consider themselves engineers and believe that architecture goes beyond engineering sciences to define and design human living space. For this reason, they see a deep connection between architecture and sciences such as psychology, sociology, art history, and philosophy.
On the other hand, another group believes that an architectural product, in terms of its structure, needs to know the engineering knowledge and skills that an architect is required to know.
In this regard, the Department of Art and Architecture of Khatam University is organizing a meeting on the occasion of Engineer Day with the title " From Soul to Body, Examining Two Different Perspectives".
This meeting is actually a debate between the representatives of the two groups of architecture and engineering with the aim of examining the reasons for these two views with a broader perspective. This event will be held with the presence of Dr. Simon Ayvazian and Dr. Javad Saghafi, the veterans of teaching architecture in universities and one of the prominent architects of recent decades in Iran.
The specialized meeting " From Soul to Body, Examining Two Different Perspectives" will be held on Wednesday, February 28th, 2024 at the Faculty of Art and Architecture of Khatam University, located on the fifth floor of the Eastern Daneshvar building. Participation is free for all who are interested.
