An Assistant Professor From John Hopkins University Will Have a Lecture on "Natural Language Processing" at Khatam University

Published: Monday, August 7, 2023

Daniel Khashabi, an assistant professor of Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University and a member of the Center for Language and Speech Processing (CLSP), will talk about the recent developments and discussions about natural language processing in an online lecture hosted by Khatam University.

According to the website of Khatam University, language interfaces based on artificial intelligence (such as chat bots) have become a prominent presence in human’s life today, and therefore, it seems necessary to become more dynamic and reliable in communication with human users. In the meantime, the important question is what technologies are behind such developments and what challenges are we facing in this direction?

Daniel Khashabi, an assistant professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins University and a member of the Center for Language and Speech Processing (CLSP), in a speech entitled "Recent Developments and Discussions in Natural Language Processing" referred to the advances in natural language processing, especially the emergence of language models and different methods that has affected the state of our technology, focusing on the prominent problems we face in this field.

Considering the limitations in the presented ideas and other missing elements needed to move towards more comprehensive interactive language understanding systems, this talk will also address the future of natural language processing research and the movement towards broader natural language processing systems.

Daniel Khashabi's speech will be presented online on Wednesday, August 9 at 16:00.

Daniel Khashabi’s work focuses mainly on the computational foundations of intelligent behavior in various communication media, especially natural language processing. The work of this assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University includes the creation of formalisms that characterize natural language processing (NLP) systems that are capable of understanding and reasoning with (and about) an uncertain world while being general to handle a broader space of contexts. Khashabi has a bachelor's degree from Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic) and a doctorate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining Johns Hopkins University, he studied at the postdoctoral level at the Allen Institute in the field of Artificial Intelligence (2019-2022).
