In the first part of this lecture, I will give a perspective of the current state of brain studies and its influential trends in the coming decades. I will argue that how the fast development of technology and experimental tools along with the theoretical and computational advancements sketches the future of brain studies and how this progress can lead to critical changes in human life.
In the second part, I will give a brief introduction to brain dynamics and in particular, the role of brain oscillations in the proper functioning of the human’s and other mammals’ brains. I will show that the macroscopic oscillations of the brain networks help to the reliable transmission of the signals in the brain and proper communication between the different areas of the nervous system that is crucial for normal brain function. I will bring pieces of evidence that how the distortion of the brain oscillations can lead to the malfunctioning of the nervous system and the appearance of different cognitive and neurological disorders. I will argue that how expanding our knowledge about brain collective dynamics can help to the treatment of brain diseases, direct the development of artificial neural networks, and lead to the advancement of the brain-machine interface tools.
